Travel Smart in Costa Rica

Costa Rica is warm, beautiful, and full of unforgettable experiences. A few simple recommendations can make your stay easier and more comfortable. Here you will find useful tips about local money, drinkable water, banking, tipping, electrical outlets, transportation, weather, and beach safety.

Currency

The official currency in Costa Rica is the colón, but U.S. dollars are also accepted in many places. Major credit cards are widely accepted in most hotels, restaurants, bars, shops, and travel companies. However, we recommend carrying some local cash for small purchases and rural areas.

Tap Water

In most areas of Costa Rica, tap water is safe to drink. Still, if you prefer, you can easily buy bottled water almost anywhere during your trip.

Shops and Banking Hours

Shops are generally open every day from around 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Banks usually open Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. ATMs are available in many towns and popular tourist areas.

Tipping

A 10% service charge and 13% sales tax are already included in restaurant bills. Even so, leaving an additional tip for excellent service is always appreciated.

Electricity

Costa Rica uses 110V electricity, the same as the United States. Most places use the standard two-flat-pin plugs.

Taxis

Official taxis are red with a yellow triangle on the side. In many areas, using a trusted driver, private transportation, or transportation arranged by your hotel or tour company is the safest and most comfortable option.

Clothing & Weather

Costa Rica is mostly warm, so light summer clothes are ideal. Bring a light sweater or jacket for cool evenings, mountain areas, and air-conditioned spaces. A rain poncho is also a smart idea, especially during the green season.

Beach Safety

Costa Rica has beautiful beaches, but ocean conditions can change fast. Always pay attention to local warnings and avoid swimming where there are strong currents. Never leave valuables unattended on the beach.
